Formula

Corrected Cl = Measured Cl × 140 / Na

Clinical Notes

Corrected chloride = measured chloride × (140 / measured sodium), where 140 mEq/L is the normal sodium used as the standard reference. This correction accounts for the dilutional or concentration effect of abnormal sodium and allows chloride to be interpreted relative to sodium. A low corrected chloride relative to sodium suggests a non-anion gap acidosis (or chloride-responsive alkalosis), while a high corrected chloride is seen with hyperchloremia.
