LDL = Total Cholesterol − HDL − (Triglycerides / 5)
Clinical Notes
Friedewald LDL = TC − HDL − TG/5, valid only when triglycerides are below 400 mg/dL. Optimal LDL is below 100 mg/dL; for most adults with risk factors the target is below 70 mg/dL. Because the formula assumes a fixed TG:VLDL ratio of 5:1, it underestimates LDL when triglycerides are very high. The calculator will not compute a result when triglycerides exceed 400 mg/dL.
